Spectrecom Films

Spectrecom Films are a London based film and web video
production company and leading web video marketing authority,
offering full video production services UK wide.

Spectrecom had a requirement for a large central video storage
solution for their increasing volume of video production. The
solution needed to be able to stream live video content and be
edited by their very busy team of editors.

Encompass were invited in to look at their workflow, and advise
Spectrecom on a solution that would meet their existing
requirements and also provide cost effective expansion.

After Spectrecom had looked at various offerings they decided
that the GB Labs Space solution from Encompass was the right
one for them.

Ben Franklin, head of post production at Spectrecom commented:

"We'd long realised a need to improve our media management
at Spectrecom, and had made several enquiries with companies
who dealt with IT consultancy. Our company has quickly expanded
in the last 24 months, meaning we've had to accommodate many
more staff members in Post Production. This in turn has resulted
in a greater requirement for a simple but efficient workflow.

Upon meeting Peter Lea and Ben Beer of Encompass, we were
immediately presented with a solution that met our needs. Not
only was it well explained, thought out and detailed in writing,
but it was well within the price range we had set out.

From putting through the initial order to installation by Lee and
the Support team, we were always well informed of progress
and a conscious decision was clearly made by Encompass to
give us the best possible customer service. Unlike many other
similar companies we've dealt with in the past, Encompass were
always working in our best interest, with a view to developing a
relationship that would run well into the future."

Blue Zoo Productions

Animation-house, Blue Zoo Productions had a requirement for
32TB of high performance shared storage to support new
projects including Nick Jr’s Olive the Ostrich and C-Beebies’
new multi-platform animation Tree Fu Tom.

This requirement came about as the award-winning animation
house moved to new studios in London and in response to the
increased storage demands of stereo 3D content.

GB Lab’s high-performance central storage system, Space,
was installed through GB Labs’ dealer partner, Encompass,
following a demonstration at Broadcast Video Expo (BVE).
The system is being used by Blue Zoo to manage after-effects
and renderings.

Tom Box, founder at Blue Zoo commented:

“The decision to go with Encompass was easy. After we met
them at BVE, Encompass set up the system at the studio,
allowing us to test the compatibility of Space with our systems
before we made any decision. We’d evaluated other storage
solutions but they seemed overly complicated and tied us into
proprietary software. For us more software just means more
problems.”

He added: “What was particularly attractive was how plug and
play it all was. Space was really easy to install and seamlessly
integrated into our network and workstations like Maya without
downtime. The speed, cost and sheer ease of the system meant
it was a no brainer for us.”

itfc teams up with GB Labs for HD Space

Space becomes a key part of the facility’s asset management
solution

9 September 2011 – itfc, a subsidiary of Deluxe Entertainment Ser-
vices Group and supplier of content preparation and media man-
agement services, has deployed GB Labs’ Space storage
technology to manage HD content for its clients, who include
Channel 5 and ITV.

itfc deployed GB’s Space central storage solution along with
two Space EX’s and two additional RAID units for added
performance, to help it store and manage HD content for its
clients. Implemented and fully up and running within three weeks,
the storage solution has already been used to accommodate the
increasing volumes of HD files.

“To keep up with our Final Cut editing architecture, it was
essential to have an Ethernet based solution that could cope
with multiple high-speed HD streams, allowing us to play a mini-
mum of 20 HD streams simultaneously,”
explained Gez Quinn,
technical services manager at itfc. “Not only did Space promise
peak performance, it also offered extra ease and compatibility
with our existing systems, which saved us having to alter the
network in order to make it work.”

itfc tested a number of competitor solutions over several
months and chose Space as their storage solution following
a recommendation from GB Labs’ reseller Encompass. With itfc
currently streaming HD at a maximum of 220 Mbits per second,
they needed a solution that would allow more guaranteed
throughput under simultaneous read and write conditions, GB
Labs were able to offer performance speeds of up to 4500 Mbits
per second during testing with its Space solution.

“I never have any qualms in recommending GB Labs or its
solutions,”
said Peter Lea, director at Encompass. “With twelve
years experience of the reseller channel, they understand that
plug and play and low maintenance technology, which offers
resellers margins, is the key to success.”

Since implementing the Space package, the system has fulfilled
itfc’s initial objectives for a HD storage solution and it’s now an
integral part of the facility’s asset management solution.

“Space was a great solution to buy into,” Gez continued.

“Not only did GB Labs clearly understand our business model
and knew exactly what we needed, their Space worked straight
out of the box with no fuss or bother.”

About Space

GB Labs’ Space product range was created to satisfy the needs
of the storage-hungry, performance-critical video-editing industry.
Since their launch at IBC 2009, Space modules have been used
all over the world, including at the FIA GT1 World Championship
and by Thomson Reuters at the 2010 Football World Cup in
South Africa.

The Space range is designed to handle storage for businesses
of all sizes. The range goes from the highly portable Mini Space
in 4TB and 8TB capacities, to the scalable enterprise-class Space
in building blocks of 16TB, 32TB and 48TB. For more information
